Politics in China 3rd Edition (PDF) offers an accessible yet authoritative introduction to how the world’s most populous nation and speedily rising global power is governed today. On the 1st of October, 2019, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) commemorated the 70th anniversary of its founding. And what a tumultuous and eventful seven decades it has been! During that time, under the control of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), China has been changed from one of the world’s deprived countries into one of its rapidly growing economies, and from a weak state hardly able to protect or govern its own territory to a rising power that is challenging the US for global influence.

However, in the late 1950s, the PRC experienced the most fatal famine in human history, caused mainly by the inactions and actions of its leaders. Not long after, there was a collapse of government authority that pushed the country to the edge of (and in some places really into) anarchy and civil war. And in 1989, the CCP released the army to cruelly crush demonstrations by students and others calling for political reform.

China is now, for the most part, prospering, peaceful, and proud. The CCP sustains a firm grip on power through a combination of harsh repression and popular support largely based on its present record of promoting rapid economic growth. Yet, the country and party face serious challenges on many faces, including a slowing economy, pervasive corruption, extreme inequalities, environmental desecration, ethnic unrest, and an increasing tide of social protest.

The 3rd edition has been comprehensively revised, thoroughly updated, and includes a new chapter on the internet and politics in China. The ebook’s chapters offer overviews of major periods in China’s modern political history from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, examinations of important topics in contemporary Chinese politics, and analyses of developments in four important areas located on China’s geographic periphery: Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
