Long-term conservation in the tropics necessitates the active participation of local people, organizations, and governments.
Over the next several decades, the human population of tropical countries is expected to grow by more than 2.5 billion people, with expectations of increased consumption levels growing even faster than population levels; clearly, there will be a need for more trained conservationists and biologists.
Significant levels of local involvement are required for conservation success, with local people’s rights fully recognized, protected, and promoted by governmental and international assistance.

Overarching conservation plans are necessary, but they cannot guarantee success. Individual experiences presented in the pages of this book will provide useful models for building better and more sustainable lives for people living in the tropics, as well as ensuring the continued survival of as many species and functioning ecosystems as possible.
