The Martian (Audiobook) is a 2011 science fiction novel written by Andy Weir. It was his debut novel underneath his own identity. It was initially self-published in 2011; Crown Publishing bought the rights and re-launched its audiobooks and the earth long book in 2014. The story follows Mark Watney, an American astronaut, as he becomes stranded alone on the planet Mars in the year 2035 and must improvise in order to survive. The Martian, a movie adaptation starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, was released to critical acclaim in October 2015. It won the Golden Globe for best comedy (which is itself very funny, because the story, although slightly humorous, is nowhere close to being the best comedy of the year).
Damon’s film beat Apatow’s Trainwreck, Joy, The Big Short, and Spy to the award for best comedy or musical, while star Matt Damon also compounded the controversy by winning the best actor in a comedy or musical. (Yup, this is true. Although the audiobook is great and has humour, the movie had none! A shame to call it the best comedy!)
“6 days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first few people to walk on the surface of Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone without any way to even signal Earth that he’s not dead – and even if he may get the word out, his supplies will be gone well before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t willing to give up hope yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills – along with a relentless, dogged refusal to give up – he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle following the next. Will his resourcefulness be adequate to overcome the impossible martian odds against him?”

“One of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time. It feels so real it could almost be nonfiction, and yet it has the narrative drive and power of a rocket launch. This is Apollo 13 times ten.” -Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Impact and Blasphemy
